I didn't grow up with my Dad. My memories of him are wrapped up in the feelings of a child's memory. In early 2021 he shared the story of his childhood with me.
After he passed, I learned so much more about his achievements and values. He wasn't a man of many words but his actions spoke volumes.
For his essay he was awarded a George Washington Honor Medal

He continued as an electrician's mate and won his first Good Conduct Medal
In 1966 he served aboard the USS Perch as the Leading Petty Officer Electrical Division and Chief of the Watch and received his second Good Conduct Metal.
From 1966 to 1968 Dad served aboard the USS Tunny receiving a Vietnam Service Medal for three engagements, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon. (Read about it in the Meritorious Unit Commendation Citation)
His fourth enlistment was on the USS Fulton, where he received another Meritorious Unit Commendation Citation, and then the USS Hunley out of Guam.
His last enlistment he worked at Brooklyn Navy Yard where we spent our summers and school breaks with him.
After twenty years of active service, Dad transferred to Fleet Reserve and moved to the Philippines. He was a civilian instructor at the Philippine Military Academy.
In 1981, he returned to active duty as a Senior Chief Petty Officer aboard the USS Cape Cod in San Diego.
On December 14, 1983 he officially retired from the US Navy.
